why we do it

Even if you decide not to make an appointment with us, we want everyone to understand why removing pet waste is critical.

We love our pets! They’re our babies, and we want to give them the very best. Food, comfy beds, vet check ups—we take better care of our dogs than we take care of ourselves! But we never realized how dangerous it could be to leave their waste in the yard. Like probably a lot of other people, we assumed pet waste was similar to cattle manure, like a fertilizer. This assumption is incorrect and dangerous.

It’s hard to get everything done. We have families, jobs, housework. Certain chores get prioritized over others.

But it’s important that you do not ignore this. Pet waste is more than gross. Check out the information below to learn more.

  • One gram of dog waste can contain as much as 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, including E. coli, which causes stomach cramps, diarrhea, intestinal problems, and even kidney disorders. Parasites in pet waste include hookworms, ringworms, tapeworms, and Salmonella. The bacteria and parasites in pet waste can literally give you a disease. Simply touching pet waste contaminated with certain bacteria can cause severe illnesses.

  • Let’s get scientific. First, the nitrogen in pet waste is so concentrated that it is more likely to kill the grass than fertilize it. And since it can take anywhere from 8 weeks to 1 year for pet waste to completely decompose, it is just poisoning the grass and spreading bacteria.

  • Uncollected pet waste can be washed into rivers and creeks when it rains. This not only contaminates the water with bacteria and parasites, but also excess nutrients like nitrogen which decreases the oxygen levels in the water. This can kill native fish, plants, and animals and make the water unsafe for drinking, swimming, and fishing.

  • How many times a day do you tell your kids to wash their hands? How many times do they actually listen?

We once heard someone lovingly refer to their daughter as a “petri dish” because, let’s face it, kids play outside and get dirty, and they bring all that nasty inside with them. They get sick, they get you sick, they get their classmates sick.

Pets spend even more time in the yard, walking on waste that has been hiding in your grass for weeks. Then they come in and bring it in with them, too.

i know it’s gross to think about, but if you have pet waste in your yard, you most likely have it in your house, too.
